Focus on Comfort When Creating an Outdoor Living Space

The National Association of Home Builders reported in 2022 that 58 percent of surveyed homeowners said a connection with nature, or the outdoors would be top of mind in design choices.

As more homeowners seek out outdoor living, spaces are trending larger. Outdoor kitchens, living rooms, grilling stations, and covered patios are becoming highly requested to make these areas truly multi-use.

Homeowners want their outdoor space to be relaxing extensions of their interior living rooms and kitchens which involves designing and constructing to seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor living. Depending on the size and layout of a home this may require creative solutions including expansive windows and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors which will open the space between the indoors and outdoors.  In addition, more focus on efficiently designed outdoor spaces featuring built-in features, such as fireplaces, firepits and kitchen appliances.

Some popular priorities for remodeling outdoor spaces include:

Outdoor kitchens: Many homeowners are now looking to create an outdoor kitchen where they can cook and entertain guests while enjoying the outdoors. Outdoor kitchens can include everything from grills, smokers and cooktops to sinks and refrigerators.

Outdoor dining: If space allows, add a large table for dining on top of an outdoor weather and stain-resistant rug. For more dining options, consider adding an outdoor kitchen bar where people can sit and stand to socialize, eat, and drink.

Comfortable seating: The trend is moving towards upscale relaxation. Outdoor seating is essential for creating a comfortable and inviting outdoor space. Homeowners are now opting for seating options like sofas, armchairs, and chaise lounges to make their outdoor spaces feel more like an extension of their homes.

Outdoor lighting: Outdoor lighting is an important consideration for both safety and ambiance. Homeowners are now choosing lighting options which include recessed lighting, chandeliers and pendant lights to create a warm and inviting outdoor environment.  Consider ceiling fans which can provide additional lighting while keeping you cool.

Privacy and security: Covered patios/roof decks are ideal ways to maintain outdoor privacy.  Porch curtains can be added to increase privacy as well as to provide shelter from the elements. For security, the rise in smart technology for homes is prompting homeowners to also invest in securing their home’s outdoor living spaces with cameras.

Overall, the goal of creating an ideal outdoor living space is to construct a functional, and attractive space with all the comforts you enjoy that blends and feels like an extension of your home.
